Breaking Down the Treatment
For every tooth that is missing in your smile, a single dental implant can replace it. The implant structure is meant to replace the tooth and its root and stimulate the jawbone.
Three components are put together to create an implant. These parts are:
- Screw: The implant screw is drilled into your jaw. Over time, it will fuse with the material of the bone to create a solid base for your smile and any other prosthetics you receive.
- Abutment: An abutment attaches the screw to the prosthetic.
- Prosthetics: Dental crowns are the most common prosthetic provided to patients. Bridges or dentures can also be used. It is the only visible part of the entire implant.
Both the screw and abutment are fabricated from titanium, a biocompatible material that is strong yet lightweight. It will not cause any irritation to your tissues or bones. Prosthetics are typically made from porcelain, though ceramic or zirconia can be utilized, too. All three of these materials mimic the appearance of a natural tooth.
Impressions, whether digital or physical, will be made of your oral cavity and sent to the lab where the prosthetic is design; this ensures that it fits you perfectly.
Book an appointment with a dentist near you if you’d like to discuss this treatment and whether you’re a good candidate for it.
The Steps Involved
Upon being approved for this procedure, the following will take place:
- Local anesthesia is provided to ensure a positive experience and to numb the treatment site against any sensitivity or pain.
- The implant screw is drilled into the jawbone. Over several months, these components will fuse, a process called osseointegration.
- When your mouth has recovered, you’ll return to your dentist and have the abutment and prosthetic placed. Your dentist will check that everything is correct, such as the size of the crown and that your bite pattern remains the same.
- You will be given aftercare instructions before you go.
