Orthodontics Near You
Orthodontics is a branch of specialized dental medicine that primarily deals with straightening patient smiles and remedying jaw dysfunction. A number of treatments can be provided to patients to achieve this. However, Invisalign and traditional metal braces are the most common.
Book a one-on-one session with our NW Calgary dentists to learn more about orthodontics. They will tell you if this avenue of care is wise for your smile and dental health.
What are Traditional Braces?
Braces consist of a metal framework fastened over the top of patients’ smiles. The structure is situated and tightened according to your dentist’s treatment plan. Tiny elastics can be incorporated into the framework if necessary.
The main reason why patients receive braces is to make their smile more beautiful and functional. The framework exerts a firm pressure on the teeth, triggering movement. When this is maintained over an extended period, it results in a straighter smile. Your bite pattern (and therefore your ability to chew) and jaw function will be fully restored once your treatment ends.
Orthodontic care typically lasts for 12 months to 2 years. Keep in mind, though, that your journey will differ from others, and it is up to your dentist to determine when your smile is fully aligned. We also offer personalized orthodontic care for teens, creating treatment plans that meet their specific needs.
How are Braces Applied?
First, you will need to book and attend an introductory session with your dentist. During this time, they will ask about your smile goals, preferences, and needs. Your oral cavity will be assessed with x-rays and through a physical evaluation. A tailored treatment plan will be designed based on all this information.
Impressions of your top and bottom row of teeth are created and delivered to an external lab. The braces are created here over a period of a couple of weeks. You’ll return to the dentist to have them adhered to your smile. Final adjustments will be made, and at-home care instructions will be given to you before you leave.
It will take time for your mouth to get used to the braces. Medications like Tylenol can help you manage discomfort. Stick to eating very soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soup for the first few weeks until your body adjusts. But don’t worry; you’ll be able to get back to your normal diet in no time.
Routine check-ins with your dentist in NW Calgary will be scheduled so they can record your progress and tighten your braces if needed. Feel free to ask questions about your treatment — you have the right to understand how such measures impact your smile.
