What Happens During a Cleaning
Dental cleanings are typically paired with check-ups since the treatments complement one another and can be done in just one appointment. A dental hygienist will perform the cleaning.
- Exam: X-rays will be taken of your oral cavity, allowing your dentist to assess the health of your tooth roots, jawbone, and nerves. They will also physically examine your mouth, looking for gum disease or decay. Your dentist will also talk to you about your medical history and at-home hygiene habits.
- Guided Biofilm Therapy: We offer all of our patients complimentary Guided Biofilm Therapy with their cleaning. Bacteria, plaque, and other particles are cleared away from the surface of your teeth, in between them, and along your gums.
- Brushing and Flossing: Your teeth are brushed with gritty toothpaste (sometimes, you’ll be able to choose the flavor!). This removes stains, polishes your smile, and freshens your breath. Then, your hygienist will floss your teeth for you.
- Spit and Rinse: You’ll be able to gurgle and spit water to wash away any lingering debris.
- Fluoride: This is the final stage of the cleaning. Fluoride strengthens your teeth and stops cavities from forming. It will be spread across your smile and left for 1 minute. You can spit and rinse once more before you’re free to go.
If you have questions, speak to your dental team before you leave the clinic. They can supply you with customized care practices to implement at home that will help keep your smile bright and healthy, including diet adjustments, wearing a mouthguard, or booking a cleaning more often.
